Alina and James first met in 2004 when they were co-counselors at a summer camp in Northern Virginia. Since their first meeting, they remained friends for several years; however, they didn’t start dating until December of 2015, over 10 years later. Their first “date” was actually a hangout as friends over lunch, but they ended it as an actual date watching Star Wars Episode 7 in the theater. After dating a year and a half, the couple became engaged on a very windy day at Alina’s family beach house in South Bethany, Delaware. And all of this led to their beautiful wedding day at Fort Myer | Arlington VA Wedding Photographers.

The couple chose to hold their ceremony at the Fort Myer Old Post Chapel. The interior of the chapel is stunning and classically elegant, such a perfect representation of this couple. The white walls and dark wood accents complement each other beautifully. The stained glass windows above the altar provide such old world charm. After the ‘I Do’s, the couple grabbed some photos with their wedding party and family. We captured some pictures of the newlyweds grabbing a few moments alone together as well. They wanted to take a stroll together, hand in hand, and soak in the moment.

The reception was held at the Patton Hall Officers Club at Fort Myer. The room was absolutely stunning. From the white linen table cloths, gold chairs, beautiful floral arrangements, and the enchanting chandeliers, the room was breathtaking. The bride and groom showed off their dancing skills with their first dance as husband and wife, and then it was time for the bride to dance with her father. After the formal dances commenced, speeches were made, and the cake was cut, it was time for everyone to hit the dance floor. Family and friends alike had a blast dancing well into the evening. Congratulations, Alina and James!

And nothing could be truer for Meredith and William. To celebrate the love they found with one another, the two decided to have a luxurious and intimate wedding at The Hays-Adams Hotel in the heart of Washington DC. Their classic wedding was coordinated by Beacon and Berkeley Events and was nothing short of a modern day fairytale.

Meredith’s day started off getting ready with her 3 bridesmaids, keeping with their small and intimate feel they so wanted. The girls cheered with champagne and were ready for the day’s events to be underway. William’s day started off much the same, putting the final touches on his tux with his groomsmen. It was then time for the ceremony.

The ceremony took place in the Hays-Adams Room, the namesake room of the hotel. Edge Floral Design provided exquisite floral arrangements for the room, taking its debonair look of dark wood and brass detail finishes and giving it a softer, elegant look perfect for a lavish wedding. The floral garland of white roses popped against the dark mahogany of the fireplace, serving as the altar. The white candles in the towering candle vases provided the perfect romantic touch. Meredith’s father walked her down the white carpet aisle to the man of her dreams. The two said “I Do,” and sealed their love with a kiss.

The couple’s ceremony took place at The Top of The Hay, a stunning reception room with surrounding french doors allowing not only access to their gorgeous balcony but brilliant panoramic views of the Nation’s Capital landmarks, such as The White House and The National Monument, and vaulted skylights. A classic black and white art deco dance floor kept everyone dancing the night away. Congratulations, Meredith and William!

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History — in conjunction with Hosts DC — did it again! This incredible closing conference reception hosted more than 700 guests for an evening of jungle fun.

Natural History Museum Washington DC event photographers Rodney Bailey Photography

The Museum of Natural History was the perfect setting because the museum already features exhibits of exotic animals and other natural attractions, so the planners from Hosts DC played it up with verdant backdrops of vines, jungle palms, and tropical plants. The lighting made one of the rooms look sun-dappled as the rays came down through the canopy of trees.

Hues of blue and green enhanced the theme even more. What a way to end this conference as guests enjoyed chatting over delicious bites!

4 Surprising Ways Stress Can Impact Your Life

4 Surprising Ways Stress Can Impact Your Life

No matter if you’re working from home or in the office or trying to maintain your work-life balance, stress affects us all. It can feel difficult trying to balance each aspect of your life on a day-to-day basis. However, it’s crucial to check yourself and how you’re doing because the effects of stress can become serious if left untreated. Keep reading to learn about some surprising ways stress can affect your life and help prevent it!

Skin

Stress can cause a chemical response in your body that makes your skin more sensitive. It can also make it more difficult for skin problems—such as eczema or rosacea—to heal. Think about it, have you ever noticed your skin conditions worsen when you’re stressed? Maybe it’s a random breakout or irritation; either way, stress causes your body to make hormones resulting in more oily and acne-prone skin.

So, how do you combat stress and the effects it has on your skin? First, be sure that you don’t neglect your skin during stressful situations. While it may feel easier to skip over a step or forget your routine altogether, that can do more harm than good. It’s essential to have an established and well thought out routine to ensure that your skin receives the attention it deserves. To do so, consider products such as this tretinoin based acne cream from hers, that is designed to fight blemishes and keep your skin clear and smooth. Keep in mind that it may take some time to adjust to the product, and it’s recommended that you begin using a pea-sized about every three nights to allow your skin to build up a tolerance. Simply wash your face beforehand, apply the cream, and moisturize after!

This beautiful bride-to-be knows all about staying healthy and stress free. “I’ve been cooking meals from my favorite healthy recipe books and keeping to my daily yoga routine.” It works as you can see from her glowing skin, hair and smile at her budior photo session.

Immune System

Your immune system is vital in protecting your body against infection and disease. But, what happens when your body is overcome by stress? Put simply, your body will go into hormonal overdrive, trying to combat and respond to the situation, making your body more susceptible to a handful of health issues such as heart disease, or asthma. This is because when your body is producing hormones in response to your stress, it decreases the number of white blood cells in your system. It’s said that stress can be responsible for as much as 90% of all illnesses and diseases, and is the most common cause for doctor visits.

Since its common to experience stress in your day-to-day life, it only makes sense to find solutions that fit your typical activities. One way you can de-stress is by finding relaxing activities such as yoga or meditation. Yoga has been proven to hold stress-relieving qualities because it incorporates exercise, breathing techniques, making for an effortless approach to clear your mind and relax your body. Exercise is considered a housekeeping activity in that it helps boost the immune system and decrease inflammation in the body.

Burnout

When you experience stress for an extended period of time—also known as chronic stress—it can lead to burnout. Burnout is defined as the exhaustion of a person’s physical or mental resources due to a prolonged strive towards unrealistic expectations. Burnout can lead to a lack of energy, concentration, and memory issues, as well as stress, among other problems. If you find that this applies to you, it’s important to recognize what exactly is leading you to feel this way.

Due to the current events surrounding COVID-19, you may feel the effects of burnout more now than ever before. Whether you’re rescheduling wedding events, working from home, homeschooling children, or all of the above, it’s critical l to take time to give yourself a break. To do so, make sure you’re finding ways to socialize with loved ones, as this can help relieve your stress and provide you with positive interactions.

Sleep

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that sleep is essential to your wellbeing. Unfortunately, when you’re feeling stressed, it can directly affect the amount and quality of sleep you get each night. According to the CDC (Centers For Disease Control and Prevention), 35.2 percent of adults in the United States are getting less than seven hours of sleep each night. This can lead to sleep deprivation, as well as increased stress and lasting negative effects on mental health.

To ensure that you’re receiving proper sleep and to help live a more stress-free life, begin by winding down each evening before your desired bedtime. Whether you take this opportunity to relax with a good book, or a small snack, giving yourself a break will prepare your body for a good night’s rest. Additionally, try to avoid using your cellphone or television during this time, considering the blue light emitted from these devices can affect your sleep. Other things you can do are to utilize your bed only for rest so that your body won’t associate it with other activities and avoid eating at least forty-five minutes before your desired bedtime.

Take a Deep Breath

It’s okay to be upset over the circumstances, but don’t allow it to hinder your momentum moving forward. Even though it feels like the world is on pause, try to remain grounded and patient as that will benefit you in the long run. Remember that you’re not alone and lean on your support system to help you through these stressful times. Take some time to practice breathing exercises, as they can come in handy when you’re feeling overwhelmed. It’s incredibly important to remind yourself that you can do this, and by practicing your breathing, you will reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.

Stay in Touch

No matter if you’re in self-isolation alone, with your partner, or your family, it’s more important than ever to stay connected. If your screen time has increased, it might feel as though you’re more connected than ever through social media, but that’s not always the case. While liking or commenting on a post provides small interactions, it’s not as beneficial as having a conversation with those close to you. Whether it’s through a text, a phone call, or video chat, communicating with your loved ones can provide you with a sense of normalcy. It’s also important to reach out to those you know that may be struggling. You could even reach out to other brides-to-be, as you can relate to what the other is experiencing and find solutions together.

Practice Self-Care

You’ve most likely seen the videos of women across the world coloring and cutting their hair at home. While it may be tempting to do it yourself, save yourself the trouble and find other ways to treat yourself at home. Take this time to perfect your skincare routine and test out new products to ensure you have glowing skin when you walk down the aisle. If you have skin concerns you’d like to address—such as fine lines or acne—consider skin treatments with an active ingredient of tretinoin. This ingredient works to target these concerns, as it helps the skin to renew itself and leave you with smoother, and clearer skin. You can also have fun with your skincare and make DIY face masks from the comfort of your kitchen; you’d be surprised what you can make with the ingredients you have in your pantry!

Embrace Your Creativity

Now that you have more time on your hands, you may be feeling a bit stir crazy, which can ultimately add to any stress you’re already feeling. Participating in creative activities can be a healthy outlet to release any negative feelings and can even introduce you to a new hobby. If you’re in search of ideas, look for online classes to learn a new skill or hobby! Sites such as this one here offer a wide variety of classes to satisfy all your creative needs. Crafting is an excellent way to ease stress, and who knows, you might create something perfect for your future wedding!

Work Up A Sweat

Studies have proven that exercise is great to clear your mind, as well as reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Luckily, it doesn’t matter if you prefer running, lifting weights, yoga, or another form of exercise as there are plenty of ways to get your blood pumping from the comfort of your own home. Maybe you’re looking for a new way to get your sweat on; if so, consider trying an online yoga class for a relaxing work out session.

Regroup and Start Planning

Thinking of your wedding may cause stress due to possible cancellations, changing dates, and the unfortunate reality that it might not occur as soon as you’d like. Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be! Focus on the positive in this negative situation. Regroup and start planning again for the future. Use this as an opportunity to revisit all of your plans and make changes you may not have thought of before. For example, do you want your theme and decor to remain the same? If you’re changing the date for a new season, this is the perfect time to give the big day a new identity!

One of the best things about Washington DC is that it fosters so much diversity. The Gaylord National Harbor Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland serves as the perfect venue to bring together different companies to provide great networking. The center boasts event space up to 546,889 square feet with a large space of 10,000 square feet – a perfect layout to host a convention or trade show.

We recently had the pleasure of photographing a trade show at The Gaylord National Harbor Resort & Convention Center. At this event, we were able to photograph diverse food companies throughout the industry, such as: the world-wide restaurant Five Guys; a farm-to-table service, Veg Fresh Farms; kitchen HVAC contractor, Chapman Ventilation; and even trucking service, Cedar Point Trucking. It was amazing to see just how vast the food industry is with so many different vendors in attendance. What better way to show that broadness than by photographing the event?

3 Reasons We Love Trade Show Photography:

1. Highlight Unique Vendor Products: While trade shows host an extensive list of different vendors, sometimes they can get lost as just another number on the list. By providing photographs of each vendor, we’re able to capture what makes each vendor special.

2. Capture Customized Vendor Booths: Not only are we able to capture their unique products but also the company’s unique feel as well. They way vendors set up and adorn their vendor booth says something about the culture of their company. Photographs are the perfect way to capture that unique company spirit.

3. Trade shows are WORK!: Just that. Trade shows are a lot of work to coordinate and set up – certainly an event worth featuring! Why not capture all of the hard work that has finally come together successfully through photojournalistic photos that depict the full event? And how great would it be to provide your loyal vendors with some great shots of all their hard work as well?!

Although American patriotism has transformed over the decades, that ever-changing diversity is what makes America so beautiful and unique. America is a nation where we challenge boldly, innovate bravely, and connect deeply. And when those three come to fruition to produce something truly amazing, we love to celebrate!

What better place to celebrate opportunities and successes than at the iconic Smithsonian Museum of American History. This inspiring museum filled with stories and mementos about our history is the perfect place to celebrate our most recent accomplishments and our bright future ahead. This Smithsonian Museum is one of our favorite and most accommodating venues for events, and it’s always a pleasure to photograph.

Host a special after-hours event at The Smithsonian Museum of American History. Before dinner or while enjoying cocktail hour, guests will back in time as they check out real pieces of our history. Whether you’re curious about the Civil War or the history of America’s entertainment industry, there’s a story for it all.

For example, the museum is home to Dorothy’s ruby red slippers from The Wizard of Oz as well as George Washington’s military uniform. Even Kermit the Frog has taken up residence in one of the exhibits where he has an endless audience to entertain.

Why This Spy Museum Event Photographer Can’t Get Enough

Spy Museum Washington DC Rodney Bailey Photography event photographer DC

If you know anything about me, you know that I absolutely love the Spy Museum in the L’Enfant Plaza in Washington D.C.  So much so that I used it as the setting for a blog post a few months ago about highlighting the differences that the timing of photography has on the natural lighting of a particular venue. Of course, I was going to use the International Spy Museum. Where else?

Spy Museum Washington DC Rodney Bailey Photography event photographer DC

So why do I love the Spy Museum for event photography so much? The list of reasons could go on and on, but I will limit it to these 4 main reasons: amazing architecture, a stunning ballroom, scenic views throughout, and their rooftop.

Spy Museum Washington DC Rodney Bailey Photography event photographer DC

Let’s start with the amazing architecture. From the moment you spot the building, the architecture grabs you. It’s red, black, and chrome modern exterior beckons you to see what it is all about. Once inside, the open foyer, complete with a tree pillar, allows guests to gander at all things spy, such as the Bond Aston Martin.

Spy Museum Washington DC Rodney Bailey Photography event photographer DC

Let’s glide to one of the main attractions, the ballroom. With floor to ceiling windows, the natural light is absolutely stunning. For my event planning friends, the “spy” is the limit for creating stunning environments for our clients.  Take a look at these tables with silver and blue velvet linens complemented by magnificent blue velvet curtains. Mirrored dining chairs are the perfect touch to accentuate the modern architecture and make sure the light streaming in through the windows is reflected throughout the impressive space.

Spy Museum Washington DC Rodney Bailey Photography event photographer DC

Speaking of those windows, take a look at the beautiful scenic views right outside. The Spy Museum’s location is a perfect spot to catch a glimpse of the Capital Building. One of my all time favorite photos is the one of the Capitol Building with streaks of blue light from the ballroom’s drapery. Although that’s not all there is to see!

Spy Museum Washington DC Rodney Bailey Photography event photographer DC

What better way to take in all the beautiful views that DC has to offer than on their rooftop? The Spy Museum’s rooftop area, complete with a bar, allows guests to see the heart of the city. One can see the National Monument, The White House, The Lincoln Memorial, and so many other of out nation’s landmarks. I just can’t get enough!

Getting Ready and First Looks have become an important part of wedding day photography. Gone are the days of only savoring the most perfect pictures on your wedding day. Now, some of the bride and groom’s favorite photographs are the little moments captured by photographers when everyone forgets we are there. We get to be the wallflowers that show the bride all the tender moments her groom went through getting ready to greet her at the end of the aisle. And we get to show the groom all the emotions and excitement the bride went through getting ready to walk towards her future husband.

No longer is it bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding. In fact, it is now encouraged. First Looks allow the bride and groom to have some intimate moments with each other before all the festivities kick off. It is a nice way of reminding each other what their big day is really all about. However, First Looks can also be done between the bride and her father. Courtney and Kenny chose to forego a First Look with each other, but Courtney, always a Daddy’s Little Girl, chose to have one with her dad. I was so glad I was able to capture such a precious moment.

Willard Hotel wedding Washington DC Rodney Bailey Photography

For those keeping with tradition, as this bride and groom did, they chose to do a First Moment but without looking at each other. I love the picture of their moment of grounding with one another in a private room. They were able to relax for a moment in cozy chairs sitting back to back and exchange their vows. Courtney and Kenny’s wedding was held at the Willard and St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Washington D.C. After getting ready with their wedding parties and sharing tender moments with those they love most, they were ready for their big day and the rest of their lives together.

Built in 1840, the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle is both a beautiful and historical place of worship. St. Matthew’s Cathedral is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Nation’s Capital and is located off Rhode Island Ave. I was able to visit St. Matthew’s to photograph a wedding recently, and (as always!) was blown away by its beauty.

St Mathews Cathedral weddings Washington DC photographers Rodney Bailey Photography

The red brick, sandstone, and terra cotta exterior is such a striking street view. Seating about 1200 people, the nave can host a large wedding yet its lush interior creates an intimate setting for a wedding not quite of that magnitude. The nave boasts a magnificent mosaic depiction of its namesake, St. Matthew, behind the main altar. The exquisite dome above the altar is studded with large windows that let in natural sunlight making it perfect for wedding photography. The green marbled altar is such an extraordinary feature. The bride’s train looked even more gorgeous when it was cascading down this beautiful architectural feature.

St Mathews Cathedral weddings Washington DC photographers Rodney Bailey Photography

One of the most important parts of a wedding, besides the ‘I Do’s, of course, is the bride’s entrance. St. Matthew’s center aisle in lain with rich, crimson red carpeting making it perfect for elegant aisle photos. The bride’s white dress pops against such a deep background. The beautiful wood tones of the pews and the walls are complemented so nicely by the gold embellishments throughout the cathedral. Paintings of Bible stories, landscapes, and ethereal figures adorn the walls and intricate vaulted ceilings. Glass paned chandeliers hang from the high ceilings bringing all of this beautiful craftsmanship to light.

The Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle is hands down one of the most beautiful churches in which one can be wed. It is as if it has been plucked straight from a fairy tale. May this new Mr. & Mrs. live happily ever after…

On their first trip to the Nation’s Capital, Will and Mimi were excited to explore the city together and see landmarks of our country’s beautiful beginnings. It was a beautiful day, albeit cold and windy. However, their gusto for their adventure kept them comfortable and warm. Mimi knew she was going to see some amazing things while out for their sight seeing walk, but never did she imagine it would end with the sight of Will down on one knee asking, “Will you marry me?” And in front of the Reflecting Pond no less. Was that quite the icing on top or what?

Will had asked me to be there to capture some pictures to document such an amazing moment in their lives. Will had flown both their mothers up from Tennessee to be a part of the surprise too! Mimi was over the moon thrilled to not only begin the rest of her life with the man of her dreams but to be able to celebrate the occasion with the two women who helped make them into the amazing people they are today.

Will and Mimi were such a fun couple to photograph! They wanted all the classic poses, of course, but they wanted the session to have a relaxed feel as well. They did such a great job of just living in the moment and allowing me to snap photos as they walked around hand in hand. They were naturals in front of the camera. Someone even thought ahead to bring a little sign for them to read announcing their engagement. In just the short time that I was able to work with them, I could already see the foundations of a wonderful marriage. Their love is so strong and they have fun with one another. Congratulations, Will and Mimi!

Washington DC’s Taste of the Nation is an event in which DC’s top tastemakers come together donating their time, resources, skills, and heart and soul into bringing awareness to child hunger in America in order to end this long standing epidemic. This event will leave you inspired to create your own unique dishes and cocktails and also give back to those in need. What better way to do so than to bring out your tastebuds and your checkbooks with 100% of proceeds going to support the efforts to end child hunger by the No Kid Hungry campaign.

We’ve been the proud event photographers for this fundraising event and as well as other fundraising events and award dinners for this amazing organization. We love being able to capture the amazing things this organization does in efforts to help those less fortunate and to leave the world a little, if not a lot, better that they found it.

Taste of the Nation takes place at the stunning National Building Museum. The interior is filled with booths set up for each chef and mixologist. Guests can mozy around witnessing culinary works of art and cocktail concoctions that will make your head spin, but hopefully not literally. Whether guests attend with some friends or as a corporate outing, there are plenty of places to stop and snag photographs with one another. One of my favorites is the gigantic #nokidhungry sign. I love that it serves the purpose of a photograph opportunity and yet simultaneously raises more awareness with just a simple post on social media.

We love when couples select The Conrad for their wedding day. True to their slogan, you might expect most luxury hotels to have one elegant terrace or rooftop – but The Conrad boasts three terraces and one rooftop bar and lounge.

Event Feature | The Warner Theatre

The Warner Theatre stands strong in historic downtown Washington D.C. Opening its doors in the thick of the roaring 20s, The Warner Theatre, formally known as The Earle Theatre, was an attraction for all from top to bottom, literally. The basement formerly served as a restaurant and ballroom, the rooftop hosted many garden parties, and of course the main floor consisted of the theatre, the main attraction. In the mid 1940s, the owner, Harry Warner of Warner Brothers, set his sights on having the venue host strictly movies only. Because he wanted to make his mark on the east coast, he decided to change the name on the marque to his name. Thus, The Earle Theatre became The Warner Theatre.

The theatre still boasts its rich history through the magnificent detail work throughout the interior. Beautiful gilded, vaulted ceilings set the stage when you enter the foyer. Antique crystal chandeliers hang from the remarkable ceiling. Rays of light bounce off the gorgeous crystals and gold leaf paintings creating a breathtaking scene. Moving into the theatre, the magnificent ceilings continue. The center of the room hosts an extraordinary chandelier that lights up the room. Magnificent stained glass lights illuminate each corner while outlining the beautiful artwork.

The rooftop garden continues to be a hotspot. Surrounded by lush, rich greenery, it is the perfect location to enjoy cocktails while mingling amongst friends or coworkers. Ivy scales the trellis on the back wall while grasses outline the balcony. With covered seating, this outdoor oasis provides a perfect atmosphere year round.

“Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale.” – Lauren Destefano

Fall really is one of the most picturesque times of the year, and that means two things…beautiful leaves and family photography sessions. There is just something about capturing the turning of the leaves that makes a family photo! The varying ranges of rich yellow, orange, and red hues of the leaves provide such beautiful backdrops. The lighting in the fall brings out the colors in the foliage and creates beautiful natural light for great family photographs.

Family Session Photographers Northern Virginia Rodney Bailey Photography

We chose to take advantage of the gorgeous great outdoors during this time of year for this family photography session. We found a beautiful clearing set against the backdrop of a forest wall of trees. I was excited about having the light shine through in the clearing and also having it bounce off the yellows of the trees in the background. I love the wardrobe this family chose too! The golden yellow played so nicely with the yellowing leaves and the deep navy blue popped in the light from the setting sun. It really brought the whole picture together.

Family Session Photographers Northern Virginia Rodney Bailey Photography

This family was so fun to photograph – thank you, Vanessa and Neal! Their little girl had such a great time running around the clearing and playing in the leaves. I can still hear her giggles as Dad was tossing her up in the air. My favorite picture is the one of the family of three (at least for the next few months…more on that later!) walking hand in hand. The light coming through the stand alone tree shines beautifully on the young family. I can picture them taking so many more walks as a family as the years go by. I couldn’t be happier to capture these photographs for this wonderful family!

To us, fall is the season of love. The red and orange leaves throughout DC and the surrounding areas paint a stunningly romantic backdrop. The crisp air creates a distinct vibe that somehow makes things look fresh and vibrant.

While our team at Wedding Photojournalism by Rodney Bailey loves capturing beautiful weddings (especially in the fall!), we specialize in photojournalistic images, which includes documenting the whole journey. In between weddings, you will find us shooting surprise proposals and engagement portraits, too! You deserve to have your love story told from start to finish.

Marriage Proposal Photographer Dumbarton Oaks Rodney Bailey Photography Washington DC

This was a true surprise proposal. Maura may have had an inkling that this day was coming, but judging by her astonished expression and huge smile, I don’t think she knew what Keith had up his sleeve. He chose the most beautiful sunny day to explore the Dumbarton Oaks estate in Georgetown with his best friend. They toured the gardens and enjoyed the perfect weather leisurely together. In the meantime, we set up behind one of the stone walls and waited for the magic moment.

Marriage Proposal Photographer Dumbarton Oaks Rodney Bailey Photography Washington DC

Once they arrived at Dumbarton Oaks, Keith guided Maura through the rose garden and down into the Fountain Terrace.  He found in intimate spot on the green lawn surrounded by trees showing off their fall colors. It was just the two of them – not a single person was around. He knew this was it. After pausing and taking Maura’s hands, he got down on one knee and asked her if she would spend forever with him. She responded with an emphatic, “Yes!” and the sweetest kiss. We let them share their moment together a little longer, and then popped out to take a few more closeup portraits of the newly engaged couple and her sparkling ring.

Congratulations, Keith and Maura! What an honor it was to capture this moment for you!

Stay tuned for their engagement session in Part II!

In our previous post, you got to see Part I of Ben and Stephanie’s seaside wedding on beautiful Little Diamond Island off the coast of Portland, Maine. With a name like “Little Diamond,” you can probably guess that this is a great location for sparkling destination weddings. It truly is the perfect blend of relaxation and beauty!

In Part I, you got to see the first half of the wedding story: wedding day setup, the heartwarming vows, the romantic first kiss. But what you didn’t get to see was the perfectly decorated venue filled with happy faces.

The people are the ones who make the venue – and the entire wedding weekend for that matter – so special. We loved photographing the bright shades of blue and orange that stood out against the dark waves and rocky shoreline. We had fun with the festive bobbers, bouys, oars, and paper lanterns that filled the boathouse venue. But as soon as the guests poured in and the reception started, the place came alive!

After landing that sweet first kiss, Ben and Stephanie couldn’t wait to get the party started. The sky looked like it painted a mesmerizing sunset just for them! They took a few moments alone on the shoreline to simply relish in the moment. The smiles on their faces say it all! This destination wedding was everything they were hoping for and more – and what an honor it was to capture it for them to look back on with each passing year of their wonderful marriage. If we know anything about these two, we know their journey ahead is fill with lots of love, laughter, and adventure!

As much as we enjoy photographing large elegant weddings in Washington DC, we also love the chance to shoot intimate weddings in more remote places. The balance keeps things fresh and fun. We never know what we’re going to get when a couple first contacts us, and helping them not only fulfill their wedding day vision but also capture it to the fullest puts the wind in our sails!

Ben and Stephanie opted for a romantic destination wedding on Little Diamond Island off the coast of Portland, Maine. And WOW! was it stunning! The whole day felt like a breath of fresh air, and the atmosphere perfectly mirrored the couple’s live-life-to-the-fullest personality. They both love the coast of Maine – the groom and his family grew up and vacation on the island, one of only 60 residents on the island. Ben and Stephanie tied the knot in front of a charming boathouse (know on the island as the Casino) as the waves gently lapped onto the sand and rocks. They kept the ceremony perfectly simple, spending all of their time focused on each other, their personalized vows, and their commitment to one another in marriage. It was beautiful. They had us all reaching for the tissues!

We definitely had some fun with this creative coastal theme! Stephanie’s beautiful white wedding dress looked so pretty hanging on the side of the boathouse next to the colorful bobbers, bouys and lures. That’s not something you see every day, and the photo authentically captures their love story and personality as a couple.

After their touching vows, everyone headed inside the boathouse for celebration, good food, and lots of toasts! Surrounded by just their closest friends and family, everyone had a great time celebrating this special couple.

The great thing about a destination wedding is that it doesn’t have to end! Each guest had a personalized fishing bobber as a creative escort card which made for a fun key chain gift too!

A Simply Perfect Wedding Day | Take an Evening Stroll

A Simply Perfect Wedding Day | Take an Evening Stroll

A Simply Perfect Wedding Day | Take an Evening Stroll

Welcome to Part Four, and the final installment, of our “A Simply Perfect Wedding Day” Series. Our last piece of advice is we want you to take an evening stroll on your wedding day. Yes, you heard us! Walk away from the celebration for a few moments to enjoy the reason for the celebration: each other.

Most receptions are three to four hours long, so there should be plenty of time to schedule a ten minute get away into the celebration. While this may seem daunting because every guest wants their share of time with the bride and groom, make sure it’s on the schedule you give the coordinator, DJ, maid of honor or best man, and they will make sure it happens. Think of it as your first walk together as husband and wife and life partners. You’d make time for that!

Londontown Gardens wedding photographer Maryland Rodney Bailey photography

Not only do you need that time to circle back with each other (in case you forgot our golden rule from our third post in this series: Experience the Celebration Together), but it gives a much welcome breath of fresh air and pause from all the festivities in order to spend a bit of quiet time together. And, your photographer! What, you didn’t think that was coming?

Londontown Gardens wedding photographer Maryland Rodney Bailey photography

Londontown Gardens wedding photographer Maryland Rodney Bailey photography

Yes, an evening stroll around your reception venue and getting outdoors (weather permitting) is the perfect opportunity to capture beautiful photos of the two of you in a different setting and with different lighting than your earlier bride & groom photo session (see the first installment of this blog series: Consider a First Look). This even provides a wonderful opportunity for us to capture more candid photos of the two of you while your at your leisure.

Londontown Gardens wedding photographer Maryland Rodney Bailey photography

Literally, taking 5-10 minutes to regroup, enjoy each other and get some spectacular sunset photos is a must for your evening schedule!

A Simply Perfect Wedding Day | Experience the Celebration Together

A Simply Perfect Wedding Day | Experience the Celebration Together

A Simply Perfect Wedding Day | Experience the Celebration Together

With over 30 years of experience photographing the most beautiful weddings, we have lots of advice to share! Having a simply perfect wedding day will look different for every couple. But, there’s one golden rule that you’d never take the time to think about, let alone plan for or strategize about: EXPERIENCE THE CELEBRATION TOGETHER!

Can you imagine not spending time with your bride on your special day? Or, coming to the end of the reception and wondering what your groom has been up to for the past three hours? Sounds ridiculous, right? But, it can all-too-easy become your reality. Here’s our strategies that we share with our couples on how to ensure they enjoy their wedding reception together that we think are pretty darn important and apply to everyone!

Londontown Gardens wedding photographer Maryland Rodney Bailey photography

Here’s the SCHEME we give our bride and grooms:

S is for stare: Stand close to each other at the altar and stare into each other’s eyes. This will be the last time until the limo ride to the honeymoon suite that you’ll have each other’s undivided attention.

C is for contagious: Remember, fun is contagious…if you are having a blast, so will your guests. They came to celebrate YOU and your bride/groom, so make sure you’re celebrating too.

Londontown Gardens wedding photographer Maryland Rodney Bailey photography

H is for hold hands: Remember to hold hands and stay near each other throughout the reception. The day goes by so very fast, so experience each part of your wedding day with the one you chose to marry. This will help slow things down. Not to mention, it will create lasting memories that you both had of the night together.

E is for Emotions: Smile, laugh, cry, hug, kiss, dance…fill your wedding day with these emotions. Don’t sweat the small stuff. At the end of the day, if you married the one you love, the day was a success!

M is for moment: Stay in the moment. Be the host, not the planner. Have the time of your life!

A Simply Perfect Wedding Day | Spend Quality Time Before the Wedding Nuptials

A Simply Perfect Wedding Day | Spend Quality Time Before the Wedding Nuptials

Welcome back for Part Two of our “A Simply Perfect Wedding Day” Series. We are revisiting Rebecca & Jake’s wedding at the beautiful Historic London Town & Gardens. As wedding photographers in Maryland, we’ve seen a ceremony or two. And as we mentioned in the first installment, we thought that there were SO many wonderful things that they did right, that we wanted to share some wedding day advice!

Londontown Gardens wedding photographer Maryland Rodney Bailey photography

Part Two will be centered around treating yourself to some quality time together as bride and groom before guests arrive for your nuptials. This allows for a relaxed bride and groom photo session (ahem, see Part One about a First Look), unhurried family and bridal party photos as well as time built in to freshen up, relax and get ready for the big day! Let’s dive into why these benefits are, in fact, so beneficial!

Treat Yourself…and Your Significant Other

Londontown Gardens wedding photographer Maryland Rodney Bailey photography

Spending Quality Time before the Wedding Nuptials allows for a relaxed bride and groom photo session. This has become commonly known as a First Look. This allows the bride and groom to spend some intimate, alone time to center themselves on what the day is all about: each other. This also minimizes the amount of time dedicated to pictures after the ceremony. Speaking of cutting down wait time before the reception…

Londontown Gardens wedding photographer Maryland Rodney Bailey photography

Spending Quality Time before the Wedding Nuptials allows for you, as the bride and groom, to not only take pictures together, but grab those cherished photos with your families and wedding party as well. We all know that one family member that can’t be tracked down for photos because they’ve already hit the cocktail bar. Taking pictures with family before the wedding starts creates an easier transition, for everyone, between the ceremony and reception.

Londontown Gardens wedding photographer Maryland Rodney Bailey photographyLondontown Gardens wedding photographer Maryland Rodney Bailey photography

Spending Quality Time before the Wedding Nuptials also creates built in time to freshen up, relax, and get ready. This becomes especially important if you plan to take any photos outdoors. Needless to say, Mother Nature can be unpredictable.  Being able to cool-off/warm-up and reapply makeup and perfume/cologne is essential for looking and feeling your best, and there is no other day in which that is more important.

Congratulations to our wonderful couple, Rebecca & Jake! Not only did they have the most amazing wedding at the beautiful Historic London Town & Gardens, but they also did SO MANY THINGS RIGHT on their big day (okay, maybe everything right in our opinion)! They’ve inspired this “A Simply Perfect Wedding Day” blog series, so you can be inspired to incorporate these elements to make your big day as special and perfect as theirs. It only seems fitting for the first in the series to be about the First Look!

7 5 19 Rebecca Malinick Jake Grant wedding Londontown Gardens Maryland Rodney Bailey photography

We love when our couples plan to see each other before their wedding ceremony. It’s not a must, but we certainly have seen huge benefits for the bride and groom when doing a First Look. We’ve all heard of those people at weddings that, rather than watch the bride, watch the groom. It’s because of that oh-so tender moment when a man sees the woman of his dreams walking towards him to start their forever.

7 5 19 Rebecca Malinick Jake Grant wedding Londontown Gardens Maryland Rodney Bailey photography

Why consider a First Look?

A First Look cocoons all that tenderness into a private, intimate moment. The bride can now focus only on the groom, not on the crowd, the pace of her walk, or encouragement her father might be whispering in her ear. The groom is also free to focus only on his bride, not on the crowd, to make sure he’s not lock-kneed, and if it’s okay if he cries. (It’s always okay, men… highly encouraged really!)

7 5 19 Rebecca Malinick Jake Grant wedding Londontown Gardens Maryland Rodney Bailey photography

A First Look secures one of the few coveted times a bride and groom get to have alone time. Beyond the sentimentality of the first time seeing each other, it ensures that there are a few moments in which you can encourage, affirm, and cherish each other. There will be so many wonderful moments on your wedding day, but almost each and every one of those moments will incorporate someone other than just your significant other.

7 5 19 Rebecca Malinick Jake Grant wedding Londontown Gardens Maryland Rodney Bailey photography

A First Look allows the bride and groom to take their pictures together before the ceremony, therefore, offering flexibility to minimize the time for pictures afterward. This also means it can potentially cut down time in between the end of the ceremony and getting to the party….I mean, reception.

Why We Love Holiday Party Photography | National Portrait Gallery Washington DC

Why We Love Holiday Party Photography | National Portrait Gallery Washington DC

Why We Love Holiday Party Photography | National Portrait Gallery Washington DC

Do you have the holiday spirit? Maybe not quite yet – it’s barely September after all. But after seeing these phenomenal holiday parties hosted at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, you might change your mind! Over the next few weeks, many organizations will start to organize their holiday parties. Honestly, we can’t wait for those cooler temperatures and festive events.

Here are four reasons we LOVE holiday party photography:

  1. Unique Ambiance

Holiday parties are unlike any others. It’s inevitable, after shooting our first holiday-themed event of the year, our team instantly gets into the holiday spirit. We can’t wait to see what unique designs and festive holiday themes this year will bring! Will yours be one of them? We’d love to help you document your spectacular event from the tiniest detail to the most unforgettable moment!

Holiday Party Photography National Portrait Gallery Rodney Bailey Washington DC

  1. Priceless Expressions

We’re not entirely sure why, but holiday parties elicit some of the very best candid images. As the year winds down and people start looking forward to some extra time with their families, they tend to relax and have some fun. This means hilarious dance moves, great conversation, and authentic facial expressions. This time of year really brings out the best in people, and we love capturing it!

Holiday Party Photography National Portrait Gallery Rodney Bailey Washington DC

  1. Holiday Cheer

We all felt it as kids, and let’s be honest, that feeling never goes away. The holiday season is infused with a unique spirit not felt the rest of the year. Everyone has a little pep in their step, and unless you’re Uncle Scrooge, we inclined to love a little deeper during this time of year. We love seeing holiday-themed banquets filled with that special cheer.

Holiday Party Photography National Portrait Gallery Rodney Bailey Washington DC

  1. Fun Décor

During the holiday season, you can get away with a little extra sparkle, color, and extravagance. The childhood awe returns when we see the room covered in red and green. Just like this party at the National Portrait Gallery, images of falling snowflakes and twinkling trees mesmerize guests – and our photographers! It’s truly a pleasure to take it all in from our side of the lens.

Your guests will love starting the day with a lively brunch in The Solarium at the Hilton Washington DC National Mall. The sunny space is the perfect place for warm conversation, delectable breakfast treats, and of course, fresh coffee and tea. We’ve recently noticed that brunch events are rivaling traditional dinners and late-evening cocktail parties. Our favorite thing about brunch is the added natural mid-morning light you get through the surrounding floor-to-ceiling windows! The soft sunlight and budding trees around The Solarium make for a different experience altogether. In the daytime, you get exceptional views – take in the National Mall from afar as you chat with friends over a warm mug of coffee.

We also love how versatile the space is. For a larger reception-style brunch, the space accommodates up to 280 guests. Or for a more intimate brunch for a bridal shower, executive meeting, or special get together, a banquet-style arrangement comfortably accommodates 40 guests.

Their experienced catering staff go above and beyond simple breakfast foods (unless that’s what you’re going for – those are great, too!). They serve beautifully layered parfaits, bright fruit trays, and savory dishes.

With the surrounding natural scenery, The Solarium comes with built-in appeal, but we also know a few florists who can take your brunch event to the next level with gorgeous arrangements. At this specific event, we loved how they lined the center of the tables with succulents tucked inside coffee mugs. These simple yet beautiful plants served as gifts as well as added greenery!

Say Yes to Events in the Burbs! | Northern Virginia Event Photographers at Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center

The heart of DC is vibrant and bustling with life as the city brings tourists, politicians, and locals to its many sites, attractions, and buildings. This is where so much influence and change happens. We absolutely love it here, and there’s never a dull moment. But sometimes it’s nice to get away with your head in the clouds, too (in this case, literally!).

There are several hidden gems just a few miles from the heart of DC that are worth looking into to host your next event. Guests will love the breathtaking scenery, historic sites, and convenient location – you really can have it all.

Our favorite venue located in the burbs? The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.

Most people are familiar with the intriguing, beautifully-designed Smithsonian museums in DC, but did you know that the Air and Space Museum actually has a second center located in northern Virginia? The Udvar-Hazy Center resides at Washington Dulles International Airport in Fairfax County showcases huge exhibits in real hangars, including the Discoveryspace shuttle and Enola GayBoeing B-29!

Why do we love this unique venue so much? The two hangars – totaling almost 350,000 square feet combined – are both available for you to design your next grand event. Guests can sip cocktails, make new connections, and listen to the band play beneath full-sized aircraft. Your event could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for some.

When you add the lighting and table displays, it really is a sight to behold as you feel like you are floating in the sky alongside these powerful metal birds. Every time we shoot an event here, guests walk in amazed – the surprise and awe on their faces says it all.

Want to really wow guests at your next event? This venue is the place! And we would love to be there by your side to capture every second of it. Connect with us at info@eventphotojournalism.com.

Why We Love Engagement Sessions | Engagement Photographers DC Library of Congress

Why We Love Engagement Sessions | Engagement Photographers DC Library of Congress

Getting engaged is one of the most pivotal and exciting moments of a relationship. It represents true commitment, love, and companionship. You have found the one you want to spend the rest of your life with, and you’re preparing to take the next step in one of life’s grandest adventures together!

What better way to celebrate and proclaim your love than with a engagement photography session? But not just any photos will do. You need artistic, authentic photos that reveal your true personality and love for each other in the best light possible. Most likely, you’ll use these photos for save the dates, social media, and displays at your wedding, but they’ll also serve as timeless keepsakes – the beginning of many photos to come that will tell your whole love story.

We love engagement sessions! Take a peek at this lovely couple’s session taken outside Washington DC’s Library of Congress.

Here are five more reasons to consider booking an engagement session:

  1. First Professional Photos Together – Until now, you may not have any professional portraits together. This is great way to get your photo albums going right at the very start of your relationship! Or you can use them to make your new place together feel like home.
  1. Announce Your Engagement – As great as the selfie stick is, you may want something a little professional – and more representative of you as a couple – to use for your save the dates or social media announcements. Let us know what you have in mind for theme and location, and we can make it happen!
  1. Meet & Get to Know Your Photographer – True photographers aim to capture their subjects authentically, and the best way to do that is by getting to know each other. We can chat and find a good rhythm so that you’re relaxed and confident on your wedding day.
  1. Trial Run – Use this as a way to get the photography jitters and questions out of the way before your big day. Do a hair and makeup trial, too, if you already have someone in mind for those. You can determine what poses you feel comfortable with and find a good groove as a couple.
  1. It’s Fun! – An engagement session is a great way to spend quality time together. And since you’re already dressed up, why not pair it with dinner and a relaxing walk around the city after!

Why We Love A Father-Daughter First Look | Wedding Photographers Alexandria Virginia

Why We Love A Father-Daughter First Look | Wedding Photographers Alexandria Virginia

You are already familiar with the traditional first look when a bride and groom meet in an intimate, private moment before the ceremony. First looks are so special and romantic, but there’s a new first look trend that we are absolutely loving.

The bond between a father and daughter is incomparable. He loved her first, and she will always be his little girl. And she will always admire him as the man who helped her find her path in life and grow into the amazing woman that she is today. Giving her away and ushering her into a new life with the man of her dreams is no small thing, and it deserves its own moment.

That’s why we love the father-daughter first look. Here are a few reasons to consider it for your wedding:

  1. Private Moment

Just like the grooms, most fathers would love a chance to have a moment before the ceremony with just their daughters – a time when no one else is watching, and they can just enjoy a few minutes together without pressure. He can get sentimental, and it will be lovingly received by his daughter.

  1. A Heartfelt Thanks

A father-daughter first look gives the bride a chance to tell her father how much he means to her and how thankful she for his constant love and support. And he can tell her just how proud he is of all she’s accomplished.

  1. Priceless Expressions

A father has watched his daughter from birth: the toddling stage, the Barbie doll phase, that bad haircut where he promised she looked beautiful as ever, years of cheering her on from the sidelines – he’s been there through it all. And when he sees his little girl all grown up in her wedding gown….Cue the happy tears, and bring out the Kleenex!

  1. Authentic Photos

Rightfully, most of the attention is put on the bride and groom during the wedding day. But there’s still a time and place for those beautiful family moments, and they deserve to be captured candidly, as they are happening in the moment. A first look makes sure that happens, and both father and daughter will have those precious photos for years to come.

Real Wedding Story | InterContinental The Willard Washington DC Wedding Photographers

As wedding photographers, we love capturing what makes each couple and each wedding so unique. Of course, we get many shots of the venue and décor, but what truly puts the wind in our sails is documenting those candid, in-between moments. The authentic laughter shared as the ladies get ready, the inside jokes exchanged between the guys, the heartfelt embrace between the bride and her father. These are moments that must be heard and felt, but it’s our honor and expertise to capture them in images as real as the day they happened – images that take you back and warm your heart all over again.

Courtney and Kenny had their wedding at the luxurious and historic InterContinental Willard Washington DC on Pennsylvania Avenue. A Beyoutiful Fêtedid a phenomenal job of planning and designing their wedding, and the fresh sprays of vibrant flowers by Edge Floral and five-tiered cake were stunning. But the unique love these two share was the most beautiful of all!

One of our favorite moments of Courtney and Kenny’s wedding day was their vow exchange they shared in lieu of a first look. The couple wanted to have a special moment together before the ceremony, but they also wanted the first time they saw each other to be on the ceremony aisle. We loved this idea and recommended sitting back to back in the beautiful Crystal Ballroom at the Willard – being so close while reading their vows to each other but not able to see each other made for a super emotional picture-perfect moment! We knew that the rest of the day would be just as magical – view their wedding story in photos below!

Farm Wedding Story | Maryland Wedding Photographers

We absolutely love when couples chose unique venues that have special meaning to them. It makes the experience all the more romantic and heartful, lending to candid moments and authentic images. Especially when the venue has family significance, the images serve as beautiful family heirlooms to be passed down and treasured for generations.

Hannah and Sanders celebrated their wedding day at the groom’s private family farm in Maryland. His bride-to-be is a lover of everything equestrian, and Hannah spent the morning on her wedding day tending to the horses and later gathered with her bridesmaids in the rustic barn to prepare for her big day. We couldn’t imagine a dreamier way to start the day. She was certainly one of the most down-to-earth, genuine brides we have ever met. Hannah was completely in her element, and it showed in her breathtaking wedding day bridals – she was truly glowing.

Despite the rainy May day, Sanders and Hannah enjoyed their first look outdoors – while the horses peered from the behind the barn door, of course. The soft steamy fog rising from the vibrant green grass was a photographer’s dream backdrop. Paired with Hannah’s cathedral veil and gorgeous custom wedding dress (that you just have to see below to believe), these portraits were something that many couples dream of. The rainy day did not stop this amazing couple or their talented team of wedding pros from pulling off the most beautiful, rustic farm wedding. Congratulations to this lovely couple!

Washington, DC is filled with more unique wedding venues than we can count, but some are more ideal than others for hosting the wedding you’ve always dreamed of. As experienced wedding photographers, we’ve seen a little bit of everything over the years. To provide the best guidance and recommendations for our clients, we keep track of our favorite venues and love sharing a little about what makes them so great. We have a passion for helping you tell your story through photography, and you deserve only the best on your wedding day.

For a venue truly representative of DC, we love the stately, timeless look of The National Portrait Gallery. Not only is the National Portrait Gallery designed with stunning elegance, we find it uniquely symbolic of our own work, too. The museum itself showcases diverse forms of portraits of people who have shaped American history and culture into what it is today. Like us, the art tells the story. We utilize different mediums and styles, but we have a deep appreciation for this artistically historic venue. We have a feeling you’ll be equally enchanted.

For lighting and space, this museum is phenomenal. The Great Hall and Luce Center offer flexible space for designing an event that best fits your style, theme and needs. However, when the weather is nice, many couples opt for an outdoor reception in The Courtyard due to the romantic ambiance. The courtyard was designed with special events in mind, so they have all of the accommodations and access you need for hosting a dinner reception or cocktail & hors d’oeuvres celebration. Their staff is wonderful when it comes to recommending and coordinating with vendors. We also love that they offer early loading and setup times compared to other venues.

We enjoyed taking their couple’s photos outside the Auditorium as they cherished the moment, reveled in the romance, and shared a blissful wedding day kiss. Erin’s modern white dress looked stunning on her, and we loved her matching bridal bouquet filled with calla lilies – including the unique black and Picasso varieties. B Floral did a phenomenal job!

The lighting by Atmosphere Lighting illuminated the grand white columns and added an extra air of elegance. A mix of intimate round tables and long banquet tables filled the auditorium decorated in white linens, gold accents, and classic white flowers. The wedding-white colors added a fresh touch of brightness that matched that cheerfulness of Erin and Alex’s special day.

This lovely and well-respected couple went back to where their love story began to tie the knot. CBS News correspondent Margaret Brennan and Major Yado Yakub actually met in 1998 while they were both attending the University of Virginia. But as fate would have it, they ran into each other again in 2013 on a busy street in DC. They quickly reconnected, and they haven’t looked back since! It didn’t take long for them to both realize it was meant to be, and he proposed at the university a year later.

About this sweet couple

Their love for DC allowed them to fall in love with each other, so it made sense to say, “I do!” outside of the Decatur House during the height of cherry blossom season in April. The Decatur House is a historic house museum located just one block from the White House, so it was the perfect location for their elegantly classic wedding, which was featured on the blog at Brides.com!

Their classic red, white, and navy colors fit the theme and location perfectly. We loved all of the calla lily, hydrangea, and tulip arrangements and bouquets done by the incredibly talented Barbara Von Elm of Growing Wild. Their wedding planner Jeannette Travares of EVOKE did a fantastic job of pulling the theme together for the special couple and their guests, and she was absolutely wonderful to work with!

Occasions Caterers designed five beautiful cakes for guests to choose from, including delectable flavors such as carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and marble cake with dulce de leche frosting while Perfect Settings helped pull the look together with the outdoor tables and settings.

Needless to say, we truly loved photographing this magical day for such a special couple! How about the perfect ending…who doesn’t love a sparkler departure?

This venue highlight of The Hay-Adams features Nittu & Ashish’s Wedding Celebration in January 2019. We couldn’t believe that it snowed in DC on their wedding day—which must mean even more good luck than rain on your wedding day! The bride and groom walked across the street to the picturesque Lafayette Square Park in front of the White House for photos when the snow started to fall. They were both great sports—especially Nittu with her gorgeous two-piece traditional gown! Despite the chill, the gentle snowfall was a pleasant surprise and added an extra touch of romance to the day (and some fun texture to their wedding images). The moment was so magical that neither of them seemed to notice the cold. What a special experience!

About the hotel

The historic hotel fits right in next the nation’s most iconic buildings and structures located in the heart of Washington DC, just steps away from the White House. The hotel is known for its luxurious suites, stunning event spaces, and spectacular dining experiences, so it’s no wonder that this special couple chose The Hay-Adams as the place to celebrate their marriage.

As we stepped into the reception held in the popular Top of The Hay, we were immediately enthralled with the classic elegance of it all: a tall wedding cake, red roses, white table settings, and sparkling crystal. Huge windows surrounded the room letting in the soft evening light. As we looked out, we could see the DC skyline lit up in all of its glory—the White House and Washington Monument stood front and center.  This is by far the best view in Washington DC!

Our team at Wedding Photojournalism by Rodney Bailey had fun capturing all of the dancing and laughter that took place as the evening went on. It was easy to see that Nittu and Ashish are very loved as they were surrounded and supported by their closest friends and family on their wedding day.

Wedding Photographers at The Smithsonian Washington DC | Our Favorite Smithsonian Event Venues for Your Wedding

Fantastic news! The Smithsonian has officially announced that they are welcoming social events and weddings to rent out their Washington DC museums and spaces. Just when we thought we’ve seen it all in our 30 years as wedding photographers! We are beyond excited to capture this new chapter of DC weddings at the Smithsonian. Technically, they are starting with a three-year trial run, but we sure hope it takes off successfully! Here’s a list of our favorite Smithsonian event (and now, wedding!) venues:

*You may have seen a few of these on previous corporate event venue features, but now they are also open to social events such as weddings!

Arts and Industries Building

900 Jefferson Drive, SW; 202-633-2020

We love that most of these venues offer both indoor and outdoor options. This grand Victorian building boasts a magnificent rotunda built for hosting one of the first presidential inaugural balls. The indoor capacity ranges from 1,200 seated to 2,000 standing—more space than most weddings would need. Don’t need that much? Not to worry! The minimum is 120 guests, and the outdoor space comfortably seats 130 guests.

Anacostia Community Museum

1901 Fort Place SE

Although this one will undergo renovations soon, the end result is sure to be spectacular. The current layout allows for 300 standing guests inside the gallery with 70 standing on the patio. If you’re looking for a breath of fresh air, they offer tented event space over the spacious landscaped grounds for up to 350 guests. We can’t wait to see the reveal after updates are complete!

National Air and Space Museum

Independence Ave at 6th St. SW; 202-633-2345

For a unique wedding experience, take flight into forever at the National Air and Space Museum as planes and spacecraft hang overhead, artfully suspended from the ceiling. Capacity ranges from 230 seated to 2,500 standing.

Freer | Sackler Galleries

Freer; Jefferson Drive at 12th Street SW
Sackler; 1050 Independence Ave SW

This one is mesmerizing, and we think it’s one of the most romantic options. The central courtyard at the Freer gallery is filled with greenery and showcases a glowing fountain in the middle. White stone columns surround the intimate space equipped to accommodate between 80-300 guests (depending on your chosen space).

Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden

Independence Ave and 7th St. SW; 212-916-1338

Looking for a sleek, modern space? We love the Hirshhorn! The Sculpture Garden can host 250 seated guests while the beautifully-illuminated museum hosts up to 1,000 guests.

Smithsonian American Art Museum/National Portrait Gallery

8th and F Streets NW.; 202-633-7980

These two venues share a space, which make it extra customizable. The guest capacity ranges from an intimate 40-person seated dinner all the way up to a 1200-person cocktail reception! The possibilities are endless, and you couldn’t ask for a more sophisticated atmosphere. The Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard, with its elegant glass canopy, is one of the largest and most magnificent event spaces in Washington. Designed by the world-renowned architectural firm Foster + Partners, the enclosed courtyard provides a distinctive, contemporary accent to the museums’ Greek Revival building.

The Great Hall is accentuated by late 19th century architectural highlights was the reception area where President Lincoln and Mrs. Lincoln greeted guests attending the president’s second inaugural ball. This blog features one of our favorite all-time Bar Mitzvahs! Nathan’s love for athletic shoes and basketball were reflected in this super cool, super charged Bar Mitzvah party at Dock 5 at Union Market in Washington DC. He was certainly the life of the party, and all of his friends and family had a blast celebrating with him. He is one special young man who is well-deserving of this party to kick off a monumental year. We have no doubt that he has an exceptionally bright future ahead of him.

A Bar Mitzvah With Bragging Rights

This event was meticulously designed by the talented Danielle Couick, owner of Magnolia Bluebird Design & Events.  When it’s a Magnolia Bluebird mitzvah, we know it’s going to be out of this world!  And, Nathan’s Bar Mitzvah didn’t disappoint…in fact, we think he scored some major bragging rights at school that Monday!

Danielle did a phenomenal job of making the athletic shoe and basketball theme come to life with designer sneakers adorning the tables and arcade-type basketball games for entertainment.

As one of the most scenic states, Maryland has it all. The small state is packed to the brim with gorgeous views. It doesn’t take long to travel from the mountainous west, over the rolling green hills that turn vibrant red and orange in the fall, and on down to Chesapeake Bay’s Atlantic coastline. Also in the mix, pastoral farmland and romantic vineyards span as far as the eye can see in some parts. No matter where you are in the state, it’s just a short drive into DC. What more could you ask for? Forget “Virginia is for Lovers”—the sign should say Maryland.

So now that you’ve settled on marrying in Maryland, what venue has the best display of natural beauty? Maryland Wedding Photographer Rodney Bailey holds the Woodend Sanctuary and Mansion as one of the top places to say, “I do!”

About the venue

Huge shade trees of every kind fill the backdrop. Natural light floods in between the branches, creating ethereal photos and enhancing the magic of your big day. Guests can sit comfortably in chairs out on the lush green lawn as you walk down the aisle to meet your other half under the wedding arch. What a spectacular view!

Or for the wilder at heart, take some breathtaking portraits out in a field of tall grasses and wildflowers. Inside, the mansion has gorgeous staircases, antique chandeliers, and huge floor-to-ceiling windows streaming with natural sunlight. The options are endless. Advice from Your DC Wedding Photographers | Stay Photo Ready Throughout Your Entire Wedding Process

Advice from Your DC Wedding Photographers | Stay Photo Ready Throughout Your Entire Wedding Process

How to Stay Photo Ready Throughout Your Entire Wedding Process

Looking your best isn’t solely limited to your wedding day. You’re going to want to be prepped and polished for every wedding occasion that is to come. From the proposal, engagement party, bachelor and bachelorette parties, the big day, and even the honeymoon afterward, there are so many considerations for each event. But a key detail that is highly overlooked up until the actual wedding day is being camera ready.  This goes for the grooms too! Establishing and maintaining a grooming regimen from the get-go is a proactive way to help both bride and groom reduce stress, build confidence, and ultimately look their best during a time filled with pivotal photo ops. As your DC wedding photographers, we’ve put together some great ideas to help couples prepare an effortless look for all of the professional (and candid) photos sure to come during their wedding celebrations:

Manicures

Guys, before you pop the big question, remember that your soon-to-be fiancé is going to want to share her excitement immediately! Almost instantly after you get up from your knee, your bride to be will want to show off her new ring by posting a photo to Instagram or Facebook. Do her a favor and make sure her nails are looking great to compliment her new bling. Reach out to her best friend, mom, or sisters to take her out for a manicure. Her nails will be social media ready, and she can find a nail technician or salon that she loves in order to keep up her professional manicures throughout the whole wedding process. And grooms, remember that males can have calluses and dry, rough skin so don’t forget to take care of your paws too!

Healthy Hair Care

Have you ever looked back at a picture of yourself only to notice that your hair looks much thinner than it used to, or maybe it appears lackluster? With all the time and money you put into finding the perfect photographer, you’ll want your hair looking its best for these visual keepsakes. A safe bet is to stray from experimenting with new haircuts or hair colors, and instead focus on strengthening your hair. A diet rich in biotin, or hair growth supplements containing biotin (a B vitamin essential for healthy hair structure), can minimize hair loss and promote existing hair growth – making for stunning hairdos before you each say “I Do.”

Put Your Best Face Forward

Between the dress and the ring, some brides forget that the most prominent details a photograph will capture are the expressions and emotions on their face. And with so much focus on the bride, some grooms forget that the spotlight is on them too! Make both of your excitement-filled smiles pop by keeping your pearly whites bright. Take advantage of the versatility of teeth whitening options. If you have quite some time before your engagement photo session, try a 14-day whitening kit. Want a quick touch up right before your wedding day? A one-hour express whitening kit can be a great option too.

Don’t forget about your skin’s needs for fresh-faced photos either. Wedding planning, while exciting, can also induce stress which can lead to adverse effects on the skin like breakouts and premature wrinkles. Dermatologists suggest beginning a skincare routine with a gentle cleanser that won’t strip the skin of its natural oils as drying out your skin can worsen acne and wrinkles. Similarly, it’s important to use a moisturizer as well. Seek out a non-comedogenic moisturizer (meaning it won’t clog your pores), but be sure to choose one containing an SPF to protect against UVB rays (the main cause of sunburn), so you can avoid looking like a lobster in your tropical honeymoon photos!

Behind the Scenes of Wedding Planning | Advice from a DC Wedding Photographer

Behind the Scenes of Wedding Planning | Advice from a DC Wedding Photographer

If you’ve ever attended a gorgeous wedding, you’ve probably wondered how much work went in behind the scenes to make it happen. How many hours did the bride pour over bridesmaid dress colors or spend consulting her wedding planner about the artful table arrangement? Or maybe you’re newly engaged yourself and wondering where exactly to get started with this whole wedding planning thing. Well today, this DC Wedding Photographer is pulling back the curtain and giving you a behind the scenes peek into some of the finer points that go into making a beautiful wedding happen!

Choosing a Date

You might not realize it when you receive a save the date in the mail, but likely a lot of thought and planning has gone into finalizing that date. First, there’s the availability of vendors and venues to consider. If you have your heart set on a certain location, you might have to be more flexible with dates in order to secure the perfect venue. You should also consider which day of the week to get married, as a Friday or Sunday wedding can sometimes be more affordable than the coveted Saturday night dates. Finally, when picking a wedding date, it’s important to make sure you’re not infringing on popular holidays or other important events. WeddingWire has a helpful date finder to see how popular your desired date is, as well as any holidays or celebrity anniversaries that might fall close by.

Budgeting

Creating a budget is probably one of the most important behind-the-scene aspects that goes into wedding planning. The cost of weddings has skyrocketed in recent years and without a budget in place it can be easy to overspend. To calculate an accurate budget before making any purchases, take stock of all of your available resources. This includes contributions from parents or family members, savings, or potentially taking out a personal wedding loan. Next, prioritize which parts of your wedding are most important to spend your budget on. If amazing photos to remember your day are a top priority, then maybe you’ll plan to cut back on the cost of favors. Finding a balance with your budget is the key to achieving a wedding that checks all of your boxes.

Guest List

Deciding who actually gets an invite to your wedding is one of the more stressful behind the scenes facets of wedding planning that guests usually never get a glimpse into. There are typically a lot of people’s opinions to take into consideration along with logistics like venue size and budget. Although it can feel harsh to cut people out of your list, you have to make sure you’re ultimately considering the feelings of yourself and your fiancé above all else. If you’re still struggling to make decisions, check out this handy flowchart to help the process along!

Finding Your Vendors (including your DC Wedding Photographer!)

If you’re not familiar with the local wedding industry in your area, it can be hard to know where to start looking for vendors. Luckily, social media and the internet have simplified the search a ton. Start off with review sites like Yelp, WeddingWire, The Knot and good old Google to begin surveying the vendors in your city. Read reviews to decide if they fit your aesthetic and to get an idea of how they are to work with. Then move onto vetting their websites and social profiles. Click on their tagged photos to see examples from past clients. You can also search hashtags like #DCweddingphotographer to find more potential vendors. Once you’ve narrowed down to your favorites, it’s time to reach out! Schedule a meeting or phone call to discuss what you’re looking for and determine if you feel comfortable enough to spend a part of your wedding day with this person.

Seating Chart

Much like the infamous guest list, seating charts can be a dreaded part of wedding planning. To make it easier, try to sit down with someone from each side (your mother and mother-in-law would be great) so they can help with navigating any confusing family dynamics. Then, set up a large diagram of the reception tables and use sticky notes to represent the guests at the tables. This way you can arrange and rearrange to your heart’s content without needing to erase or start over. Once you’ve settled on a chart make several copies of it for your wedding planner, venue coordinator, and anyone else who may need one, including a backup for your wedding day emergency kit. That is one document you don’t want to disappear!

Getting Ready

It sounds funny but you actually need to plan out how you’ll get ready on your wedding day ahead of time. If you’re using a hotel room that’s not the honeymoon suite, you’ll probably have to make sure it’s booked for the night before in order to get in early in the morning. If you’re planning on avoiding seeing your groom before the ceremony, you’ll also have to have some sort of travel plan in place to avoid running into each other in the hotel lobby. Generally, it’s easier to let the bride travel first and get to a “hiding” spot at the venue and then have the groom arrive second to take his place at the altar. However, you decide to orchestrate it, make sure you have a logistical plan for the getting ready time leading up to the ceremony, otherwise you might be scrambling at the last minute.

Imagine vibrant green vineyards and untouched natural beauty sprawling across hundreds of acres. The terrain rolls gently across the horizon with large, mature trees silhouetted in the backdrop. Now picture it all atop a mountain looking out over rolling hills, picturesque valleys, and a serene pond. The view goes on as far as the eye can see. Even cloudy days look pretty up here. This microclimate bubble seems so surreal. What more could you need for a romantic outdoor wedding?

The Stone Tower Winery

Luxury DC Wedding Photographer | Salamander Resort + Spa

Looking for a scenic location for a romantic wedding? How about Virginia wine country? Located in Middleburg, Virginia, the Salamander Resort and Spa has eleven venues on-site to fit the style and vision of any couple. The library is ideal for a small, sophistical ceremony, while the ballroom is great for a large, formal reception. They even off the Stallion Barn and elegant equestrian theme. Their wedding packages includes an overnight stay for the bride and groom, complete room set-up and table settings, four-hour bar, hors d’oeuvres, full-course dinner, wine toast, and even a custom-made wedding cake! (And you can add on spa and salon services for the wedding party.) They truly make it stress free for brides and grooms.

“I Do’s” on the Grand Lawn

For this gorgeous, sunny outdoor wedding, the wedding party got ready inside the luxurious resort before heading out to the lush green Grand Lawn for the ceremony. We love this venue because they’re so flexible when it comes to photo opportunities. This bride looks absolutely stunning as she stands so elegantly beside a bridled horse. What a peaceful way to relax before the big day really gets going. Her flowing sheer lace gown looked amazing against the vibrant green grass.

The ambiance and venue couldn’t have been better, but nothing could top the way the bride and groom looked on their wedding day. And I’m not just talking about their attire. When the groom saw his bride for the first time, a wave of happiness and awe overcame him. Smiles erupted on both of their faces. Our team had so much fun capturing the pure bliss that these two felt on their wedding day. That’s what we love to do best—tell stories of people in love.

Oxon Hill Manor | Washington DC Wedding Venue

Oxon Hill Manor | Washington DC Wedding Venue

By doing a simple image search on Google, you will quickly see why we love Oxon Hill Manor so much. The sprawling mansion built in 1929 displays tall white columns against dark red brick. The home provides expansive views of the beautifully landscaped property from the balconies. The manor includes two outbuildings (nice for outdoor weddings), a greenhouse, stables, formal gardens, and a reflecting pool. The mansion sits high on a hill, and the property spreads across 55 acres of picturesque landscape in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

The Many Features of Oxon Hill Manor

Most weddings, especially with larger guest lists, take place out on the lush lawn. Underneath a transparent tent or sheer ceiling drapes, guests can mix and mingle post-ceremony as sunlight streams in. Some couples even have beautiful floral arrangements or small chandeliers hanging from the top for a more formal feel. Serene gardens with views of the Potomac River provide an intimate setting for a first look and a gorgeous natural backdrop for portraits.

The interior of the mansion is just as stunning. With 49 elegant, stately rooms, you’ll be sure to get a collection of timeless wedding portraits. The wood floors, sparking chandeliers, and classic staircase make it feel even more romantic. The bridal room has tall windows and an oversized, full-length mirror for sufficient natural lighting as she and her party get ready, while the white crowned molding and cream-colored walls make the room feel even more “bridal.”

Unlike many of our other features located in the heart of DC, this one a great choice if you’re looking for something off the beaten path, and it’s still only 20 minutes from DC (just off the Woodrow Wilson Bridge). Check out http://www.mncppc.org/3019/Plan-Your-Visit to contact them or plan a visit.

We’d love to be a part of your big day! Tell us your vision, and our team of expert photojournalists will fulfill it!

Washington DC Luxury Wedding Photographer | National Museum of Women in the Arts

Several of our features include museums. We’re partial to them because they’re built to showcase subjects in the finest light possible. Whether highlighting art collections, displaying artifacts, projecting speakers, or hosting weddings, museums excel in putting that icing on the cake through a grand spotlight. So, if you’re looking for some added elegance and sophistication for you wedding, consider checking out some of the local museums. This week, we’re highlighting the National Museum of Women in the Arts. If you’re reading this with your other half, and he seems a little nervous…we’re here to reassure you both that this place is a phenomenal gem that engages both genders with its grandeur.

Versatile Functionality

We love this venue because its versatile functionality is hidden behind its shining beauty. Ornate chandeliers, arched windows with crown molding…beautiful staircases, and imperial columns (all in wedding-white) surround guests from all sides. Unlike some museums, the windows and height make it feel open, light, and spacious. The museum provides a full staff who is knowledgeable about the best creative vendors around. And they can accommodate your audiovisual needs! They’re also experienced in helping you make best use of the space for both large or intimate receptions. The museum includes four available spaces to accommodate the smallest group all the way up to 200 guests. All of them equally magnificent!

It also helps knowing that you make an impact when you tie the knot at the museum. You can feel good about what your budget is going to:

“With its collections, exhibitions, programs, and online content, the museum seeks to inspire dynamic exchanges about art and ideas. NMWA advocates for better representation of women artists and serves as a vital center for thought leadership, community engagement, and social change. NMWA addresses the gender imbalance in the presentation of art by bringing to light important women artists of the past while promoting great women artists working today.” -NMWA

Who knew your nuptials could help inspire others?! It’s a win-win for sure! Be sure to reach out to our team for more information on this venue and how we can help preserve your memories through photojournalism. We’d love to chat with you!

Washington DC Wedding Venue Feature | Fairmont Hotel Wedding

Last month, we did a venue feature on one of our favorites: the Fairmont Hotel in Washington, DC, Georgetown. But describing the venue and all of its remarkable splendor does not do it justice. This is one you have to see to believe—especially with such a beautiful couple as the focus.

The Fairmont Hotel in Washington DC, Georgetown

Recently, we had the pleasure of capturing as wedding in the Colonnade Room. The bride looked radiant in her lace, capped-sleeve dress as she swirled around the dancefloor with her handsome new husband. We love the Colonnade Room because it really puts all the emphasis on the bride and groom. The elegantly-designed gazebo has a raised dance floor in the middle with a skylight overhead. Guests can watch from the side as the new couple enjoys their first waltz. Light streams in from the garden through 360-degree windows (every photographer’s dream for giving you perfect, timeless photos).

Everything about this wedding was flawless. The soft green hues of the bridesmaids’ dresses, neutral floral tones, and lush green garden lent itself to a bright and airy atmosphere. The couple looked like they were floating on air.

One of the great things about this venue is that there are plenty of seating arrangement and photo options. The gorgeous botanic garden surrounds the Colonnade room, so for larger weddings, the doors can be opened up for more seating in the garden. Set up a formal dinner beneath the chandelier while also giving guests (and the happy couple) room to walk around and take photos. The Colonnade Room is not huge, but it’s incredibly versatile and romantic. Cheers to this happy couple!

Washington DC Art Gallery Wedding Venue | LongView Gallery Wedding

As we’ve been creating a collection of venue features, we thought it’d be helpful to show you real life weddings held at those venues through our lens. Last month we highlighted the Long View Art Gallery in the heart of DC. Readers may be a little confused or turned off when we say that it’s an “industrial-chic” atmosphere. But we have a feeling that when you see photos of this special wedding, you’ll quickly change your mind.

The Perfect Location to Host Your Big Day

The LongView Art Gallery is perfect for small- to medium-sized weddings. With high ceilings and large windows, this venue is equally spacious and intimate. A perfect balance. For this wedding, string lights draped across the beams and created a curtain of lights for the ceremony. Since it was a daytime wedding, soft sunlight streamed in from all around. It complemented the happiness and love that filled the room so incredibly well. Just outside the gallery, the brick-covered alleyway is perfect for a first look or some romantic photos of the bride and groom.

Going with a naturally elegant theme, this couple chose lots of bright greenery dotted with white blooms for the floral arrangements. The vibrant green looked amazing against the brick and concrete. A saxophone player jazzed up the atmosphere to the get the party started after exchanging vows. One look at the huge smiles on their faces and you’ll know that these two couldn’t be happier to say, “I do!”

French elegance and global décor meet natural beauty. The Meridian House rests in sanctuary of large, shady trees. Sunlight flickers across the lush lawn and bounces off the white stone and huge arched windows of the house. This is a gorgeous location for a picturesque wedding. Definitely up there on the venue list for photographers.

We love all the natural light and vibrant green color! If you enjoy being outdoors as much as we do, have your wedding ceremony out on the lawn beneath the trees and then carry the celebration inside for an evening of dancing and cocktails! When it’s dark, string lights make the garden truly magical! Or, have your ceremony inside beneath a dazzling chandelier.

French Elegance Meets Natural Beauty

The Meridian House is home to the Meridian International Center, “dedicated to promoting international understanding”. The house is decorated with original European and Oriental décor. It displays a gorgeous Mortlake tapestry from the late 17th century! Mirrored walls and original furnishings make a coveted venue for weddings. The dining room features huge, original portraits of the Laughlin family members, the family who first built and lived in the house.

Outside, you’ll find immaculate rear and side gardens, still in their original design. Even the linden trees lining the pebbled courtyard match the international theme. They were imported from Europe when the house was first built. Carefully placed garden statues are original to the house and have been well-preserved over the years. Everything about the Meridian House was crafted, placed, and preserved with purpose, fascinating all who have the pleasure of visiting! Your wedding at the Meridian House will surely be unforgettable—and we’ll make sure that you have exceptional photos to match!

Washington DC Wedding Venue Highlight | Andrew Mellon Auditorium

Washington DC Wedding Venue Highlight | Andrew Mellon Auditorium

With so many great venues around Washington, DC, we know that it’s hard to choose the best for your wedding day. After our recent post about some of our favorites…we thought we’d spend some more time highlighting the crown jewel of the Federal Triangle, The Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium!

The Legendary Columns of the Stately Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium

The stately Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium stands tall as one of the three buildings in the Federal Triangle. It was designed by architect Arthur Brown, Jr. and erected in the early 1930s. The auditorium’s seven stories of white-washed limestone, legendary columns, and red terra-cotta roof tiles make it the highlight of the Triangle. Encompassing almost six acres and stretching across 1,000 feet of prime Constitution Avenue space, this building certainly makes a statement. Due to its elegance and central location in Washington, DC, it has become a coveted wedding venue for brides and grooms.

If you’re impressed by the outside, the inside might be even more dazzling! With seemingly mile-high ceilings, rows of columns, and ornate details the space carries its own elegance. But when you dress it up with your wedding theme and lighting, it looks even more spectacular. The space best accommodates between 200-600 guests. It offers staff and security for your event, but you are responsible for all vendors and rentals.

If you are short on time but in love with the Mellon, no worries! The green rooms are perfect for 100 guests are fewer and can only be reserved 45 days prior to the event. (The green rooms are included on the entire building rental for larger, reserved weddings.)

Call them or take a tour to see if it’s right for you. We love the building because it has amazing lighting, built-in props, and unique backdrops. Wedding photography always looks exceptional here!

Professional Photographers in Northern VA | Breaking the Norm | Elopements

Several years ago, long before I was one of the top professional photographers in Northern VA if someone mentioned that a couple eloped it usually meant that a bundle of joy would be coming soon or signified an act of defiance by young couples whose parents had not blessed the marriage. But now, elopements are on the rise and for good reason! An elopement could mean that the couple just wants to focus on their love and not get lost in the hustle and bustle of wedding planning or that they want to have a destination wedding without making guests feel obligated to attend

So often, we see couples get lost in the details and forget what truly brought them together in the first place. I’ve even watched couples call off weddings in the middle of planning because of the stress and pressure. There is a time and place for big, ornate weddings—the excitement of planning brings some couples together even more—but it isn’t for everyone. Choosing to have a small, intimate wedding or elopement by no means makes it less significant.

Take a peek at these five reasons to consider if an elopement is right for you:

Repurpose your money.

Maybe after talking to your partner you realize that having a big wedding was never a dream for either of you…but traveling is. Instead of having a large wedding and skimping on the honeymoon, say your vows and then go big on a once-in-a-lifetime trip! The memories are there for the making!

Time is of the essence.

I’m not necessarily talking about a shotgun wedding to beat the due date. There are plenty of reasons couples face a time crunch: military deployment, job transitions, and travel situations are just a few situations that make elopement more practical or necessary.

Relieve stress.

Even with all of her magical wedding planning tricks, a wedding planner can’t eliminate nosy and opinionated people. If large crowds, argumentative family members, or awkward small talk make you cringe, doing a more intimate wedding may be your saving grace. You can focus on tying the knot and sharing your love without any distractions.

See the world!

Do you and your partner dream of saying your vows on a remote island surrounded by the ocean blue? Inviting 400 guests just isn’t practical, but remember that just because you elope doesn’t mean you can’t have guests, cake and flowers. Many destination venues have beautiful wedding packages that you select from the comfort of your sofa, and it’s all ready when you arrive! Just invite your closet friends and family who will probably love the opportunity to travel to a beautiful location and celebrate with you!

Seize the moment!

You met your soulmate, so why wait?! If you both of you want to skip the line and get on to your next adventure, waltz over to the courthouse or hop on a plane to Vegas. After you tie the knot, you’ll be ready to take on the world hand-in-hand!

Wedding Photographers in Washington DC | The First Steps in Your Wedding Planning Process

Wedding Photographers in Washington DC | The First Steps in Your Wedding Planning Process

I was reviewing examples of wedding planning timelines the other day when I came across a checklist that was three pages long! As soon as I looked at it, I felt my eyes glaze over. As one of the premiere Wedding Photographers in Washington DC and business owner, I love a good checklist, but going overboard defeats the purpose and creates more stress.

If you recently became engaged and feel a little overwhelmed about the next step, we encourage you to enlist help! Photographers, wedding planners, friends, and family are all great resources to help you set off confidently in the right direction. We want your wedding planning process to go as smoothly as possible and have a ton of fun doing it. Instead of bombarding you with the world’s largest list, we’re providing just the first few steps to get you started!

Enjoy your engagement party!

Before you hit the ground running, take some time to share and celebrate your exciting news with friends and family! Plus, you can probably get some good ideas and advice from guests who have already planned weddings!

Set the budget.

Not the most fun part of planning but probably the most important. Get with your partner and decide what you’re both willing to spend. If family members are contributing, discuss their part as well.

Once you decide on a ballpark number, prioritize. Have each person make a list of what is most important down to least important (DJ, cake, photography, venue, food/drink, wardrobe, etc.). Take the top 3 from both of your lists and plan on allotting extra for those things while cutting back on the less important items on your lists.

Organize the guest list.

Before you begin looking at venues, it’s important to have a general idea of the size of your wedding. Most venues have a minimum and maximum capacity. You want to make sure you get your money’s worth if many guests can’t attend while allowing for wiggle room if all of them attend. You’ll need this number while booking other services such as catering, rentals, and cake as well.

Select a wedding party.

Knowing the size of your wedding party is helpful when selecting a venue, ordering flowers, and planning attire. It’s also important for the everyone in the party to know as early as possible so they can plan to attend pre-wedding events as well as set aside time to help out—you don’t want to be scrambling to find a maid of honor a month before your big day!

Book a venue.

Before booking, decide if you want to have your ceremony and reception at the same location, whether you want an indoor or outdoor wedding, and how many people you need to accommodate. If you’re looking at outdoor venues, don’t forget to ask about weather accommodations such as heat lamps, fans, or an alternate location in case of rain.

Set the date!

This is pretty self-explanatory, but there’s one thing to consider: if you have fallen in love with a venue that’s booked or out of price range, see if they have availability or offer a lower rate during the offseason or for a non-Saturday wedding.

Hire a photographer/videographer.

Here’s where we come in! Finding your dream photographer is one of the most important steps in the planning process. I know we’re a little biased, but do you want the most important day of your life left in the hands of guests with iPhones? Find someone who you feel comfortable with and who understands your vision and shares your style. You will want these memories to last a lifetime!

Wedding Photographers in Washington DC | Picking the Perfect Venue for Your Wedding

Wedding Photographers in Washington DC | Picking the Perfect Venue for Your Wedding

Growing up, my wife had a friend who had been planning her wedding since she was twelve years old. She would cut out pictures of dresses, cakes, tuxedos, and bouquets from magazines and paste them into her wedding journal. She had everything set and knew exactly what she wanted. Years later when she found the man who would forever hold her heart, the wedding dress styles and the cake themes had all changed, but they still said their vows under an arch in the chapel that she had always dreamed of. But it’s not always that easy. You’re ready to say, “I do,” but now where to? As one of the premiere Wedding Photographers in Washington DC , I know finding the perfect wedding venue is one of the most important steps in the wedding planning process.

Which means that it’s also probably the hardest step…unless you’re like my friend. So, some things to consider:

Outdoor/Indoor

First decide on whether you want to have an indoor or outdoor ceremony and reception (or both—many people have one inside with the other outdoors). Do you want to go traditional with a church wedding, or are you looking for somewhere a little trendier? What speaks to your heart most? If you choose to have an outdoor wedding, ask the venue owners about weather accommodations (tents, heat lamps, fans, etc.)

Capacity

Next, get with your partner and come up with a guestlist. As you visit venues, ask about capacity requirements—most have a minimum and a maximum. Be sure to leave lots of wiggle room. Usually anywhere between half to two-thirds of the people you invite will attend, but I’ve also witnessed situations where nearly the entire list showed up! You want to have plenty of room for everyone to get their best dance moves on!

Bar

If you’re going to serve drinks/alcohol ask the venue about their policy and what kinds of bar amenities they can provide.

Amenities

Speaking of amenities, ask for a full list of amenities and services they will provide and what you need to find on your own. A few include:

    • Parking
    • Catering
    • Restroom access
    • Equipment rentals
    • Setup/cleanup crew
    • Tables, linens, and chairs
    • Kitchen with supplies/utensils
    • Wedding day preparation areas
    • Technology equipment and access

We hope that this list helps you get a get a good start on finding your fairytale venue. And remember, if you are feeling stressed out, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. At Rodney Bailey, we are not just photographers and wear many hats in our line of work. We have been in the wedding industry for years now, and with experience under our belt, we can confidently help you navigate the process. We know some of the best venues around that serve as the perfect backdrop for capturing your day of celebration and love! Best wishes!

Wedding Photographers in Washington DC | Ways to Remember Those Who Left Too Soon

Wedding Photographers in Washington DC | Ways to Remember Those Who Left Too Soon

As one of the premier Wedding Photographers in Washington DC, it is always so touching to see the ways people incorporate their loved ones into their big day. I recently attended a wedding in which the bride’s mother had recently passed away. Of course, my friend had looked forward to her mom helping her plan the wedding and to see her sitting on the front row smiling with happy tears in her eyes as she said, “I do” to the one she would spend the rest of her life with. And although her mom could no longer physically attend, my friend made sure to include and honor her throughout the wedding.

The ribbons on her bouquet were pieces of her mother’s favorite dresses, and her mom’s picture sat in a little charm that held the flowers and ribbons together. The back of the program shared a beautifully written tribute, and they placed her picture with a glowing candle on a table where friends and family signed the guestbook. Her mother loved to have a good time, so they served her favorite wine and played a few of her favorite dancing songs at the reception. They did such an amazing job of weaving her memory throughout their wedding day that I thought I might share some of those ideas for couples who want to honor loved ones who left too soon.

Symbolic charms

You may not want a big production or a lot of attention, so for a subtler touch, adorn the bride’s bouquet or the groom’s shoes with tiny photos, charms or pins in memory of your loved one so they can stay close to you the entire day.

Reserve a seat

Want to make sure that they are remembered? Reserve a seat at the ceremony, and place a memento of theirs on the chair. You could use something as simple as a hat or scarf or something more unique that represents their personality such as their favorite pair of running shoes or their favorite flower.

Memorial table

In addition to leaving them a seat, you could set up a table in memory of your loved one. Place their photos and a candle on it along with a story or something about your loved one. You could also use the table to display the programs and guestbook to highlight their involvement in your big day.

Serve their favorite food or drink

Did you and your loved create memories while baking or catching up over a glass of wine? Serve their favorite food or drink. You could even share their favorite recipe on the dessert table with small samples as wedding favors.

Donations for a cause

Or, in lieu of wedding favors, you could have guests make donations in the name of your loved one to a cause that represents them or that they were passionate about.

Release balloons

As guests send you off as newlyweds, they could release balloons in your loved one’s favorite color to honor their memory at the same time. What a perfect way to end a day of celebration with your loved one close to your heart!
